Furniture when quiet. Cinema when called for.
Bespoke walnut cinema furniture designed around a Hisense L9Q ultra-short-throw projector, a Celexon floor-rising screen and integrated KEF speakers.
Kustom Made was commissioned to bring a substantial home cinema system into a private residence through carefully considered joinery. The brief combined a concealed screen cassette, AV equipment storage, full-height speaker cabinets and everyday storage within one coordinated walnut scheme.
The client wanted the projector to remain on display. The cabinetry was therefore designed to give it a deliberate position at the centre of the furniture, with the retractable screen and supporting equipment discreetly accommodated around it.
Millimetres mattered.
An ultra-short-throw projector cabinet begins with the equipment specification. Projector position, screen height, speaker requirements and available clearance must work together before the furniture can take shape.
With a ceiling just 2,280 mm high, this room required careful coordination between the floor-rising screen, existing coving and projector geometry. The client’s requirement for a KEF centre speaker added another fixed element to that calculation.
Kustom Made developed the cabinet dimensions around the available height, resolving the centre-speaker enclosure, projector position and screen clearance as one assembly. Two full-height cabinets housed the large KEF side speakers, extending the walnut scheme vertically and integrating the speaker system into the room.
Three sections. One complete installation.
The main AV cabinet and screen housing were manufactured in three equal sections, each supported on five low-profile, heavy-duty castors.
The sections bolt together to form one complete unit, with the floor-rising screen spanning all three. This construction allows the assembled cabinet to be wheeled forward into the room for servicing and cleaning, with movement coordinated around the connected AV cabling.
Access to the equipment and the space behind the furniture was considered from the beginning.
Every compartment had a purpose.
The left-hand cabinet houses the AV equipment. Airflow slots cut into each section provide ventilation paths, alongside cable routes and access for maintenance.
The centre section keeps the Hisense L9Q projector visible, as requested. Two smaller lift-up storage compartments, one on either side of the projector, provide a convenient place for remote controls and other small items.
The right-hand cabinet offers additional storage in separate upper and lower compartments. The screen housing extends across the three connected sections, bringing these different functions together within a single piece of furniture.
Walnut-veneered surfaces, finished in Osmo Door Oil Satin, give the main cabinet and speaker housings a consistent material character.
Considered beyond the visible finish.
The integration extends to details that are rarely seen.
Kustom Made developed the speaker enclosures, access lids, ventilation openings and cable routes around the client’s AV specification. Protective cable-way inserts were drawn and 3D-printed in the workshop to finish openings neatly and help protect cables from abrasion.
Together with the mobile base, these details make provision for future equipment changes, maintenance and everyday care.
